Hundreds of judo athletes from more than 40 countries are competing over four days at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center at Celebration Pointe, turning the venue into a hub of international competition and local economic activity.

The tournament has drawn competitors across multiple age groups and weight classes, with matches running throughout each day. Organizers say the event is one of the largest judo gatherings the region has hosted, and the level of participation reflects growing interest in the sport both nationally and abroad.

Beyond the mat, the competition is delivering a measurable boost to the local economy. Hotels, restaurants and shops near Celebration Pointe report increased traffic as athletes, coaches, families and spectators fill the area for the duration of the event. Tourism officials point to sports events like this as a reliable way to bring visitors during quieter periods.

Local organizers credit years of planning and strong partnerships with the county and venue staff for making the event possible. They add that hosting international competition raises the profile of Gainesville as a destination for major sporting events and could open the door to future bids.

Competition continues through the weekend, with finals scheduled for the last day. Admission is open to the public, and organizers encourage residents to attend and support the athletes.
