Aaron Ashby continued his remarkable postseason run on Thursday night, delivering another scoreless appearance out of the bullpen and moving closer to a piece of franchise history in the process.
The left-hander retired all four batters he faced, striking out two, in Milwaukee's latest playoff victory. The outing lowered his postseason earned run average to a microscopic figure and extended a streak that has quickly made him the most reliable arm in the Brewers' relief corps.
Ashby has now recorded 13 strikeouts across his last several appearances without allowing a run, a stretch that puts him within striking distance of a club postseason record for consecutive scoreless innings by a reliever. Only a handful of pitchers in franchise history have matched this level of dominance in October.
His command has been sharp, his slider has generated swings and misses at an elite rate, and opposing hitters have managed just a handful of weak contact against him. The Brewers have leaned on him heavily in high-leverage spots, and he has answered every time.
Manager and teammates have praised his composure on the mound. For a pitcher who battled injuries earlier in his career, the performance has been a breakthrough on the sport's biggest stage.
Milwaukee will need more of the same as the series continues. If Ashby keeps this pace, the record book may not be the only thing he changes before October ends.
