The 2025 Major League Baseball season is barely a month old, but patience has already run thin in two major markets. The Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies both made the difficult decision to dismiss their respective managers this week, citing disappointing starts that fell far short of preseason expectations.
In Boston, the Red Sox front office announced the firing of manager Alex Cora after the team stumbled to a 12-18 record. Despite a roster bolstered by high-profile offseason acquisitions, the club has struggled with inconsistent pitching and a lack of clutch hitting. Cora, who led the team to a World Series title in 2018, had been under increasing pressure as losses mounted. "We believe a change in leadership is necessary to refocus the clubhouse and get this season back on track," a team spokesperson stated. Bench coach Ramón Vázquez has been named interim manager.
Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the Phillies parted ways with manager Rob Thomson following a 13-17 start that included a disastrous 1-7 road trip. Thomson, who took over midseason in 2022 and guided the team to the World Series that year, could not replicate that magic. The Phillies' high-powered offense has been inconsistent, while the bullpen has been a persistent liability. "This was not an easy decision, but we feel it is the right one for the organization moving forward," said Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. Third base coach Dusty Wathan will serve as interim manager.
Both teams now face the daunting task of salvaging their seasons. The firings send a clear message: in today's win-now environment, the leash for managers is shorter than ever. The Red Sox and Phillies will hope that a new voice can spark a turnaround before the season slips away entirely.
