In Baltimore, a growing sports league is giving the city's LGBTQ+ community a place to play without judgment. Queer City Sports, which started as a small gathering, now offers everything from kickball to volleyball, all designed to be inclusive and fun.
The league's founder said the idea came from a simple need. Many LGBTQ+ people in Baltimore wanted to play recreational sports but felt uncomfortable in traditional leagues. They faced stares, awkward questions, or outright exclusion. Queer City Sports changed that by making sure everyone feels safe, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Games are held at local parks and community centers. The atmosphere is relaxed. There are no tryouts, no bench-warming, and no pressure to be a star athlete. The focus is on participation and connection. Players range from complete beginners to former high school athletes. Some join to get exercise, others to make friends after moving to the city.
One regular player said the league helped them find a community. They had moved to Baltimore for work and knew no one. After joining a softball team, they found a group of people who accepted them immediately. Now they play in three different seasons.
Queer City Sports also hosts social events outside of game days. There are happy hours, volunteer projects, and even a yearly awards night. The goal is to build lasting friendships, not just temporary teams.
For many, the league is more than a game. It is a space where they can be themselves, laugh, and feel part of something bigger. As the league grows, organizers hope to add more sports and reach more people across the city.
