The Detroit Pistons finally broke a painful streak on Saturday, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-101 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. The win ended a 12-game postseason losing streak against the Cavaliers, a stretch that dated back to 2008.
The difference was simple: the Cavaliers could not hold onto the ball. Cleveland committed 19 turnovers, which the Pistons converted into 27 points. Detroit's aggressive defense forced errant passes and stripped the ball away in key moments, disrupting any rhythm the Cavs tried to establish.
Cleveland actually shot a solid 48 percent from the field and hit 13 three-pointers, but the self-inflicted wounds were too deep. Star guard Donovan Mitchell finished with 28 points but also had six turnovers. Darius Garland added 22 points, but he too struggled with ball security, giving it away five times.
For Detroit, it was a collective effort. Cade Cunningham led the way with 26 points and eight assists, while Jaden Ivey chipped in 21 points off the bench. The Pistons also dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 14 rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points.
The Cavaliers will need to clean up their play quickly. Game 2 is set for Tuesday in Cleveland, where the Pistons will look to take a commanding 2-0 lead. For now, Detroit has finally slayed a ghost that has haunted the franchise for over a decade.
