The Tampa Bay Rays did not land the big fish, but they moved fast to shore up their rotation. After failing to acquire Detroit's Tarik Skubal, the team swung a deal for Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta, hoping the change of scenery can unlock the form that made him a promising arm just a few seasons ago.
Peralta has been a disappointment this year. His ERA sits north of four and a half, and he has struggled with command and giving up hard contact. The stuff is still there, though. He can touch the high nineties with his fastball and has a breaking ball that misses bats when it is on. The Rays believe their pitching infrastructure can fix what has gone wrong.
The move comes as Tampa Bay tries to hold off the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees in a tight AL East race. They need innings and quality starts, and they are betting Peralta can provide both down the stretch. Milwaukee was willing to move him for the right package, and the Rays gave up a couple of prospects to get the deal done.
It is not the splashy acquisition fans wanted, but it is a calculated gamble. If Peralta regains his old form, this could be the steal of the deadline. If not, the Rays will have to hope their bullpen can cover for another shaky starter. Either way, they made a move, and that is more than some contenders can say.
