It is impossible to pick just four all-time greats from Oakland's rich sports history. But over a dozen super sports fans we spoke with tried anyway, and the results sparked heated debates across barstools and living rooms.
The conversation inevitably starts with the Oakland A's dynasty of the 1970s. Reggie Jackson, known as Mr. October, is a near-unanimous choice. His three home runs in a single World Series game and his swagger defined an era. Rickey Henderson, the Man of Steal, also gets strong support. He redefined the leadoff position and holds the single-season stolen base record.
But Oakland is not just baseball. The Raiders brought a different kind of thunder. Many fans insist on Marcus Allen, the Hall of Fame running back who led the team to a Super Bowl victory. Others argue for Jim Otto, the ironman center who never missed a game. The debate gets louder when you consider the Warriors' recent dominance. Stephen Curry changed basketball forever, and his loyalty to the Bay Area before the team moved to San Francisco makes him a sentimental favorite.
Then there are the wild cards. Rollie Fingers with his handlebar mustache. Dennis Eckersley, who turned closing into an art form. Or even a non-player like Bill King, the legendary voice of all three Oakland teams. One fan we spoke with said, "You cannot have a Mount Rushmore without the voice that told us the story."
The problem is that Oakland has too many icons. Every list leaves out someone deserving. And that is exactly why this debate will never end. It is a good problem to have.
