David Newton never made it to law school. The ESPN Panthers beat reporter announced Thursday that he is retiring after 20 years with the network and 45 years in the business, saying he will wake up from hip replacement surgery ready to start a new chapter. The plan coming out of Wofford College in 1981 was to pursue a legal career, but a detour into sports writing turned into a lifetime covering the NFL.
Newton, who has been the primary voice on the Carolina Panthers for ESPN since 2004, said the decision came after careful thought. He noted that the timing felt right, especially with the surgery giving him a natural pause to step away. Over the decades, he covered everything from the team's early struggles to its Super Bowl run, earning a reputation for steady, no-nonsense reporting in a market that often flies under the national radar.
Colleagues and players alike praised his consistency and deep knowledge of the franchise. Newton's retirement marks the end of an era for Panthers coverage, leaving a gap that ESPN will need to fill. For now, the beat writer who never became a lawyer is hanging up his notebook, trading press boxes for recovery time and whatever comes next.
