While the big league rotation has held together through the first month, injuries and workload management are inevitable over a 162-game season. Right now, the clearest answer waiting in the wings is Elmer Rodriguez, who has been sharp at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Rodriguez, a 24-year-old right-hander, has posted a 2.70 ERA over his first four starts, with 24 strikeouts in 20 innings. His command has been noticeably improved, and his fastball has touched 96 mph with late life. Scouts have noted that his secondary pitches, particularly a changeup that flashes plus, have become more consistent. That development makes him a legitimate option if the Yankees need a spot starter or a long-term replacement.

Beyond Rodriguez, the depth is thinner than fans might hope. Luis Gil is still building back from Tommy John surgery and is not expected to factor in until later in the summer. Will Warren has shown flashes but remains inconsistent. The Yankees also have a few veteran minor league signings, but none have forced the issue the way Rodriguez has.

The front office has been cautious about rushing prospects, but Rodriguez's performance is making the decision harder. If a starter goes down for even a short stint, he is the clear next man up.
