The San Diego Padres found a useful piece in outfielder Samad Taylor this past season, and bringing him back for another year looks like the right call. Taylor brought energy and speed to a roster that needed both, and his contributions went beyond what shows up in a traditional box score.
Taylor's biggest asset is his legs. He covers ground in the outfield and puts pressure on defenses the moment he reaches base. That kind of speed changes games. It forces pitchers to rush, turns singles into doubles, and creates scoring chances that would not exist otherwise. For a Padres team that values athleticism, Taylor fits the identity the front office has been building.
He also showed he can handle himself at the plate when given consistent at-bats. He does not need to be a middle-of-the-order bat. A player who gets on base, runs well, and defends multiple outfield spots has real value on a contending roster. Those players are not always easy to find at a reasonable price.
There is also the depth angle. A long season wears teams down, and having a player like Taylor who can step in without a drop-off matters. He gives the manager options late in games as a pinch runner or defensive replacement, roles that quietly decide close games.
Taylor is the type of high-energy player fans notice and teammates feed off. Bringing him back is a low-risk move with a clear payoff. The Padres should get it done before someone else does.
