The Detroit Lions have a problem in the secondary. That much is clear. Missed assignments, blown coverages, and late-game lapses have given opponents life when games should already be decided. But here is the thing that matters more: the Lions are still winning. And they are doing it while patching holes on the fly.
This is not a finished product. It is not supposed to be. Detroit is building a contender in real time, and the defensive backfield is the part of the project that has not caught up yet. The pass rush is disruptive. The run defense has held up for long stretches. The offense can score with anyone. Those strengths have covered for the secondary's mistakes, but they have not erased them.
The question is whether the coaching staff can fix the coverage issues before they cost the team a game it cannot afford to lose. Late breakdowns are survivable in October. They become fatal in January. For now, the Lions are good enough to win ugly. That is a sign of progress, not a reason to panic. But it is also a warning. The margin between a deep playoff run and an early exit is often one busted coverage at the wrong moment.
Detroit is not asking anyone to ignore the flaws. The team is asking for patience while it addresses them. Winning while you learn is a luxury most franchises never get. The Lions should use it.
