Teagan Kavan delivered a dominant complete-game performance, scattering just three hits, while Katie Stewart continued her torrid postseason pace with her fourth home run in four games. The Texas Longhorns seized control of the Women's College World Series finals on Wednesday night, defeating Texas Tech 7-3 in Game 1.
Kavan was in control from the first pitch, working efficiently through the Texas Tech lineup and allowing only a handful of threats. She struck out seven batters and walked two, keeping the Red Raiders off balance with a mix of movement and location. The Texas defense backed her up with clean play, turning double plays when needed to erase baserunners.
Stewart provided the early fireworks. Her solo shot in the second inning gave Texas a lead it would not relinquish. She finished the night with two hits and three RBIs, continuing a remarkable stretch that has made her the focal point of the Longhorns' offense during the tournament.
Texas built its lead with a balanced attack. The Longhorns strung together hits in the middle innings, plating three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Texas Tech fought back with a three-run rally in the fifth, but Kavan shut the door from there, retiring the final seven batters she faced.
The win puts Texas one victory away from the national championship. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday night, with Texas Tech needing a win to force a decisive third game.
