Victor Wembanyama made a statement in Game 5, shaking off any lingering questions about his health to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a crucial victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The rookie sensation finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks, putting the Spurs one win away from the Western Conference Finals.
From the opening tip, Wembanyama was aggressive. He scored the first eight points for San Antonio, hitting a pair of three-pointers and throwing down a dunk that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. The Timberwolves had no answer for his length, as he altered shots on defense and pulled down rebounds over multiple defenders.
Minnesota tried to counter with Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards, but the Spurs defense tightened in the second half. Wembanyama anchored the paint, forcing the Timberwolves into difficult outside shots. San Antonio outscored Minnesota 32-18 in the third quarter, turning a close game into a comfortable lead.
The Timberwolves made a late push in the fourth, cutting the deficit to single digits with under four minutes left. But Wembanyama answered with a step-back jumper and a block on the other end, sealing the win.
Game 6 shifts back to Minnesota, where the Spurs will look to close out the series. Wembanyama said after the game that the team is focused and ready for the challenge. The Timberwolves, now facing elimination, will need to find a way to slow down a player who seems to be getting better with every game.
