For the second week in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made defensive lineman Yahya Black a late addition to their injury report. The rookie out of Iowa has been dealing with a shoulder issue that continues to limit his availability, and his status for the upcoming game remains uncertain.
Black was drafted in the later rounds as a developmental piece for a defensive front that prides itself on depth and rotation. His absence, even in a limited role, thins out the interior line and puts more pressure on the veteran starters to carry a heavier snap count. Pittsburgh has already been managing wear and tear across the defensive front, and losing another body only complicates those plans.
The timing is far from ideal. The Steelers are entering a stretch of games against offenses that lean on physical running attacks, which means the defensive line will be tested early and often. Coaches have stressed the need for fresh legs up front, and Black was expected to help provide that.
If he cannot go, the team will likely elevate a practice squad player or lean on a hybrid linebacker to fill the gap. Either way, the margin for error shrinks. The Steelers have shown resilience before, but repeated hits to the same position group are hard to absorb. The next few days will determine whether this becomes a minor inconvenience or a real problem.
