The Philadelphia Phillies saw a winnable game turn into a frustrating defeat on Tuesday, as they fell to the Atlanta Braves after a late-game collapse. Starter Aaron Nola put together a strong outing, keeping the Braves hitters off balance for most of the afternoon. He left the game with the lead and in position for a win, but the bullpen could not hold it together.
The Phillies offense did just enough early on, scratching across a few runs against the Braves starter. For most of the game, it looked like that would be sufficient. Nola worked out of a couple of jams and seemed to have full control of the game. But the final innings told a different story.
Atlanta chipped away in the seventh and then broke through in the eighth. A couple of soft hits, a walk, and a costly defensive miscue opened the door. The Braves took full advantage, pushing across multiple runs to flip the score. The Phillies went down quietly in the ninth, unable to mount any kind of response.
It was another missed opportunity for a team that has struggled to close out games this season. The loss stings more because Nola deserved a better fate. The Phillies will need to regroup quickly, as they cannot afford to keep giving away games against division rivals. The margin for error is getting thinner with every passing week.
