The Minnesota State High School League has decided to postpone any action on granting girls flag football an "emerging sport" designation for the 2026-27 school year. The move means the sport will not move forward in the official sanctioning process until at least after the current season concludes.
League officials cited the need for more data and feedback from member schools before making a formal commitment. The emerging sport status is a key step toward full varsity recognition, as it allows schools to offer the sport under MSHSL oversight with a path to state tournament eligibility. Without this designation, flag football remains a club-level activity for most participating schools.
Proponents of the sport had hoped for a quicker timeline, pointing to rapid growth in participation across the state. Several districts have already launched programs, and interest has surged since the NFL and other organizations began promoting girls flag football nationally.
The MSHSL board indicated it will revisit the issue after the 2025-26 season, giving schools more time to assess interest and logistical needs. For now, teams will continue to compete without the structure and funding that come with official league sponsorship.
