Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, Michigan, UConn in discussions with big new blue blood-laden college basketball event

A new college basketball tournament is taking shape behind the scenes, and its early guest list reads like a Mount Rushmore of the sport. Organizers are in active discussions with Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Michigan, and UConn to join a proposed eight-team event tentatively called the "Diamond Cup." The plan is to launch the event in 2027, creating a high-stakes, single-elimination showcase that would rival the intensity of March Madness but in a controlled, early-season setting.

The concept is ambitious. By locking in programs with deep fan bases and national brand power, the event hopes to guarantee sellout crowds and massive television ratings. The remaining three slots would likely be filled by other top-tier programs, creating a bracket that could feature more combined national championships than a typical Final Four. For fans, the appeal is obvious: a non-conference game between Kentucky and Kansas is one thing, but a tournament where the winner might have to beat UConn and then North Carolina is a completely different level of early-season drama.

However, putting this together is a logistical puzzle. Schedules for 2027 are still fluid, but these programs already have commitments to conference play, existing multi-team events, and annual rivalry games. The biggest question is whether the schools are willing to sacrifice a few guaranteed home games for the risk of an early exit in a neutral-site tournament. There is also the matter of compensation and television rights, which will need to be substantial enough to make the travel and lost revenue worthwhile. If the Diamond Cup can solve those problems, it could become the premier non-conference event in the sport. If not, it will remain just another good idea that could not get out of the boardroom.
