February 3, 2025 - 13:33
Ask anyone today who Jenni Hermoso is, and their answer would likely reference her as the Spanish player kissed without consent by Luis Rubiales after Spain's historic win in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. This incident has not only overshadowed her remarkable achievements on the pitch but has also made her an emblematic figure in the Spanish 'Me Too' movement, marked by the phrase 'Se acabó' — 'It’s over.'
Before Spain's victory over England in the final, Hermoso was celebrated primarily for her incredible talent and record-breaking goal-scoring abilities. Her prowess on the field made her a household name in women's football, admired for her skill and dedication. However, the circumstances surrounding the kiss have transformed her narrative, intertwining her legacy with critical conversations about consent and respect in sports.
As Hermoso navigates this complex landscape, she remains a powerful icon of resilience, inspiring many to advocate for change and equality in athletics and beyond.
