A 52-8 record leaves little room for regret, but for the Nebraska Huskers softball team, the sting of a few defeats lingers into the offseason. While the overall campaign was dominant, the losses that did happen were often tight, turning on a single pitch or a defensive lapse. More than the scoreboard, however, the biggest change was the departure of head coach Lori Sippel, who announced her retirement after 18 seasons at the helm.
The eight losses were not blowouts. Most came in one-run games or extra innings, particularly against ranked opponents. A mid-April series against Oklahoma saw the Huskers drop two games by a combined three runs, including a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. A non-conference trip to Florida State ended with a 2-1 loss where Nebraska left 11 runners on base. Those games, as players described them, were "the ones that got away" because the team had chances to win but could not finish.
Sippel's retirement is a seismic shift. She built the program into a consistent top-25 contender, and her departure means the search for a replacement is the most important move the athletic department will make this year. Her influence went beyond wins and losses; she was known for developing pitchers and keeping the team steady through tough stretches. The new coach will inherit a roster that returns most of its offensive core but must replace key senior leadership. The 2026 season was a success by any measure, but the narrow defeats and the coaching change leave the program at a crossroads.
