The NFC West is shaping up to be the toughest division in football next season. The San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and Seattle Seahawks all have legitimate claims to being among the best teams in the league. But when you stack them side by side, one squad has a clear edge.
The 49ers enter the year as the favorite. Their roster is stacked at nearly every position. Brock Purdy proved he can run the offense, and with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle, they have the most explosive skill group in the division. The defensive line, led by Nick Bosa, remains a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. The only real question is health. If San Francisco stays intact, they are the team to beat.
The Rams are the wild card. They won the Super Bowl two years ago, then fell apart due to injuries and a salary cap hangover. But Matthew Stafford is healthy again, and Cooper Kupp is still one of the best receivers in the game. The addition of rookie wideout Puka Nacua gives them a deep threat. The defense is younger and faster than it was during the championship run. If Stafford stays upright, Los Angeles can hang with anyone.
The Seahawks are the most intriguing. Geno Smith had a career resurgence, and they have a young, dynamic receiving corps with DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. The real story is the defense. They added rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon and have a pass rush that finally looks dangerous. Seattle is not quite as polished as San Francisco, but they are trending up fast.
In a division this tight, the 49ers have the most complete roster. But the Rams have the experience, and the Seahawks have the momentum. It will come down to health and quarterback play. Right now, San Francisco is the favorite, but do not be surprised if all three teams make the playoffs.
