The CIF City Section softball playoffs continued Friday with a full slate of quarterfinal action, narrowing the field to the final four teams in each division. The semifinals are now scheduled for Wednesday, with championship berths on the line.
In the Open Division, top-seeded San Pedro continued its dominant run, shutting out its opponent behind a strong pitching performance. The Pirates will face No. 4 El Camino Real, which advanced with a narrow victory. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Carson rolled past its quarterfinal opponent, setting up a semifinal clash with No. 3 Chatsworth, which also posted a convincing win.
Division I saw several upsets. No. 5 Venice knocked off the top seed, while No. 6 Gardena surprised the No. 2 seed. The semifinals will feature Venice against No. 8 Los Angeles, and Gardena taking on No. 4 Narbonne.
Division II and III brackets also produced compelling matchups. In Division II, No. 1 South East and No. 2 Rancho Dominguez both advanced, as did No. 3 Maywood and No. 4 Animo. Division III saw top-seeded Port of Los Angeles survive a scare, while No. 2 Contreras and No. 3 USC-MAE also moved on.
The semifinal games are scheduled for Wednesday at the home fields of the higher-seeded teams. Game times are set for 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted. The championship games will be held next weekend at neutral sites.
