Girls Are Telling Us Why They Quit Sports. Are Adults Listening?

A growing body of research and firsthand accounts is revealing why girls are dropping out of sports at significantly higher rates than boys. While the reasons are varied, a clear pattern is emerging: the quality of the coaching relationship often makes or breaks a young athlete's experience. Many girls report feeling undervalued, criticized, or simply not seen by their coaches. The focus on winning over development, coupled with a lack of emotional support, creates an environment where quitting feels like the only option.

The numbers are stark. By age 14, girls drop out of sports at twice the rate of boys. Experts point to a drop in confidence, body image issues, and social pressures, but the most powerful variable is the adult in charge. A coach who prioritizes skill-building, offers encouragement, and fosters a sense of belonging can counteract those negative forces. Conversely, a coach who yells, plays favorites, or dismisses injuries can accelerate a girl's exit from the game entirely.

The solution, however, is not simply to blame coaches. It is about training them differently. Organizations are now pushing for coach education that goes beyond X's and O's. They are teaching emotional intelligence, communication skills, and how to create a psychologically safe space. When girls feel respected, challenged, and supported by a coach who sees their potential, they are far more likely to stay in the game. The question remains whether enough adults are ready to listen and change their approach.
