For thousands of student athletes, the moment a college career ends can feel like losing a core part of who they are. Michigan coaches are working to change that by helping players develop a sense of self that extends past the field, the court, or the rink.
The challenge is widespread. Most college athletes will not go on to play professionally, yet many have spent years organizing their lives around a single role. When that role disappears, the transition can bring confusion, anxiety, and a search for direction.
Coaches and support staff now emphasize conversations about life after competition long before a final season arrives. They encourage players to explore academic interests, internships, and mentorship relationships that build skills outside athletics. The goal is not to diminish the value of sport but to widen the picture of what a person can become.
Players who take part describe a shift in how they see themselves. They still compete hard, but they also learn to name strengths that have nothing to do with a scoreboard, such as leadership, patience, and the ability to recover from setbacks.
That work matters because identity built on one thing can crack under pressure. Identity built on many things tends to hold. For student athletes facing an inevitable finish line, that lesson may prove as valuable as any win.
