The Los Angeles Chargers second-round draft pick Jake Slaughter is fully leaning into his position change, moving from center to guard as the team works him into the offensive line rotation. Slaughter, who played primarily at center during his college career, acknowledged the adjustment requires a different mindset but said he is enjoying the challenge.
"At guard, you have a little more space to work with, but the angles change," Slaughter said after a recent practice. "You are not making the same calls for the whole line, so you can focus more on your own technique and the guy right in front of you."
The coaching staff has praised Slaughter's willingness to learn and his physicality in the run game. Offensive line coaches have been working with him on hand placement and footwork specific to the guard position, which often involves pulling and trapping more than a center typically does.
Slaughter said he is studying film of veteran NFL guards to pick up nuances of the position. He also noted that his experience snapping the ball helps him understand the timing of the interior line. While he has not yet locked down a starting role, the rookie is expected to see significant snaps during preseason games. The Chargers are hoping his versatility will provide valuable depth and eventually a long-term starter on the interior of the line.
