Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has publicly defended the team's decision to bring in veteran forward Paul George, dismissing criticism that the 36-year-old is past his prime. Stevens spoke highly of the newest Celtic during a press conference on Tuesday, emphasizing George's basketball IQ and playoff experience over his age.
"People focus on the number, but they forget what he brings to the floor," Stevens said. "Paul has been a two-way force for over a decade. He can still create his own shot, defend multiple positions, and he understands what it takes to win in May and June."
The acquisition has drawn mixed reactions from analysts, with some questioning whether George's recent injury history and declining athleticism fit Boston's high-paced system. Stevens countered those concerns by pointing to the team's deep roster and medical staff. "We are not asking him to carry the load like he did in Indiana or Oklahoma City. We have a strong core. Paul is here to complement that, not replace it."
Stevens also noted George's willingness to adapt his role. "He has already had conversations with our coaching staff about spacing and off-ball movement. That is the kind of professionalism you want in a locker room chasing a championship."
The Celtics are expected to integrate George gradually during training camp, with an eye on managing his minutes throughout the regular season.
