Big News on Jaguars' Long Snapper Situation

October 13, 2026 - 07:41

The Jacksonville Jaguars have acted quickly to address a critical hole on their special teams unit. Following an injury to Pro Bowl long snapper Ross Matiscik, the team moved to sign an experienced replacement rather than leave the position in the hands of an untested player.

Matiscik has been one of the most reliable specialists in the league, and his absence creates a chain reaction that affects both the kicking and punting games. Long snapper is an often overlooked role, but a single bad snap can swing field position, ruin a scoring chance, or lead to a blocked kick. That reality pushed Jacksonville to search for a veteran who can step in without a long adjustment period.

The new addition brings prior NFL experience and should be able to handle protection calls and coverage duties as well as snapping. Coaches value that kind of readiness because special teams drills are limited during the week, leaving little time to break in someone new.

For the Jaguars, the priority now is stability. The team cannot afford to let one injury ripple through its kicking operation, especially in a season where margins are thin. If the replacement settles in, Jacksonville can keep its special teams from becoming a weakness while Matiscik works his way back.
