After switching sports, Ames High grad gears up for senior season

The path to a Division I football roster is rarely straightforward, but for Iowa State's Gabe Greenlee, it has been a testament to perseverance and athletic reinvention. The Ames High School graduate, now a senior for the Cyclones, is preparing for his final collegiate season after a remarkable transition from the basketball court to the football trenches.

Greenlee initially pursued basketball at the collegiate level. However, a desire for a new challenge and the recognition of his formidable size and strength led him to walk on to the Iowa State football team. He switched sports, trading sneakers for cleats and committing to the grueling technical demands of the offensive line.

His dedication in the weight room and on the practice field has paid dividends. Through relentless work, Greenlee transformed his raw potential into reliable skill, earning a scholarship and securing a key role as a versatile interior lineman for the Cyclones. Coaches praise his work ethic and rapid development, noting his powerful frame and improved footwork.

As he gears up for his senior campaign, Greenlee's journey stands as an inspiring example of adaptability. From high school basketball standout to a cornerstone of the Cyclones' offensive front, his story underscores that the route to success in collegiate athletics can take many forms, often built on resilience and a willingness to embrace a completely new challenge.
