San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the media after Tuesday's practice, running through a lengthy list of player injuries as the team shifts its focus squarely toward the regular season opener. With the preseason finale behind them, Shanahan made it clear that the priority now is getting key contributors healthy for the Week 1 matchup, not rushing anyone back for meaningless exhibition snaps.
The most notable update concerns defensive lineman Javon Hargrave, who remains sidelined with a hamstring issue. Shanahan said the team is being cautious with the veteran, adding that he will not practice this week but has not been ruled out for the season opener. The coach stressed that the medical staff is taking a day-by-day approach, and there is no reason to force the issue in August.
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is also still working through a shoulder injury that has kept him out of recent practices. Shanahan noted that Pearsall is making progress but will need to show he can handle a full workload before being cleared for contact. The rookie has had a solid camp, and the team wants him available for the regular season, but they will not compromise his long-term health for early reps.
On the offensive line, tackle Trent Williams continues to manage a knee issue that has limited his participation. Shanahan called it a maintenance situation, saying Williams is day-to-day and that they are simply monitoring his reps. The coach did not sound concerned, but he also did not commit to Williams playing in the opener.
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who has been recovering from a calf strain, was seen doing individual drills on the side. Shanahan said Greenlaw is close but still not ready for team drills. The coach emphasized that the team has depth at the position and will not rush him back.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward was held out of practice with a groin tweak. Shanahan described it as minor and said Ward could have pushed through, but they chose to be smart. He expects Ward to return within a few days.
Shanahan also mentioned that several other players, including backup quarterback Brandon Allen and safety George Odum, are dealing with minor bumps but are expected to be fine.
The overarching theme from Shanahan was clear: the preseason is over, and every decision from here on out is made with the regular season in mind. He said the team will lean on its depth early if needed, but the goal is to have as many starters as possible ready for Week 1. The 49ers open the season at home, and the coaching staff wants the full arsenal available.
