After dropping their season opener on Tuesday, the New York Knicks head to TD Garden to face the Boston Celtics on Friday. Boston also lost its opener in Detroit, so both preseason Eastern Conference contenders will be chasing their first win of the campaign.
The Knicks need to control the glass. Boston thrives on second-chance points, and limiting offensive rebounds will keep the Celtics from extending possessions. New York must also defend the three-point line with discipline. Boston generates open looks through quick ball movement, so closeouts have to be sharp and rotations must arrive on time.
Taking care of the ball matters just as much. Live-ball turnovers fuel Boston's transition attack, and the Knicks cannot afford to give away easy baskets. Finally, New York needs a steady half-court offense. Running sets through the post and creating clean looks late in the shot clock will slow the game and keep the crowd out of it.
Both teams are eager to avoid an 0-2 start. The Knicks have the pieces to compete, but execution in these four areas will decide whether they leave Boston with their first victory.
